When I revisited Overcome by Happiness the other day I thought I’d make a “10 best indie pop albums of all time” list, vague as that genre might seem on deeper thought. However, I realized the only reason I wanted to do that was because I wanted to talk about how much I love Overcome by Happiness.
(Okay but what the hell, here’s a list—which I spent three minutes coming up with—of, if nothing else, my favorite albums that are in my iTunes library that fall under what I consider the umbrella of “indie pop.” I guess in my mind it’s gotta be fun, sing-along-able, and a little scruffy. Aside from my #1 pick, the super twee stuff has never stuck too hard with me.)
- Belle & Sebastian: If You’re Feeling Sinister
- Pernice Brothers: Overcome by Happiness
- The New Pornographers: Mass Romantic
- The Ruby Lee: They’re Blue
- The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow
- Vampire Weekend: s/t
- Heavy Vegetable: Frisbee
- Elliott Smith: XO
- Dr. Dog: Fate
- Little Joy: s/t
With honorable mention going to classic acts like Big Star and R.E.M. who predate whatever this genre of music is.
