The second part of the story is a gut-wrenching, completely heart-breaking study of aspiration, mutual growth, and loss. Chris’ struggles with drug use, Scott’s shocking death, and the evolution / disintegration of their friendships take center stage in the film’s second half. Again, many of us who didn’t have a specific insight into these pieces of the band are perhaps surprised to hear just how bad it was, just how scary, how hard. Even still, there is a familiar tone here, something anyone watching could wrap their brains around, no matter where they come from. Here are three friends who bonded at a young age over critical things like identity, creative output, over-arching goals … and had to go through incredible amounts of shit together as they got older. Much of that was right alongside exciting, wonderful things too, but yes, growing, learning and changing are universal themes that we identify with.
