In his final Poptimist column, Tom Ewing attempts to shift perspectives on the problematic nature of the meme-heavy online stream, thinking of it as a cultural form in its own right— one with its own principles, virtues, thrills, and tensions.
Tom ends an incredible run of ideas and great writing with the final Poptimist. Appropriately enough, it’s No. 45. I will very much miss seeing this column in Pitchfork’s pages (you’ll still see Tom’s writing on the site from time to time) but this is a great way to go out.
All props to Tom Ewing for his run of Poptimist columns, but I just want to underline that this particular column, on ”trollgaze” and virality and how art exists on the web, is really terrific.
